A Simple Approach
After all the fine-tuning that needed to be done on the blueprint, it was time to execute the plan. The finalized structure was a simple column constructed on a column with Washington’s statue on the top. However, there was a key detail that can’t be missed. Robert Mills was the American architect that was chosen for the project, but the statue itself was built by an Italian. It was Enrico Causici who finally designed the statue that went on the pillar, in 1829.

Even after all the tweaks that were done to keep the structure simple and minimalistic, the citizens loved it. The fine decorations that were in the original blueprint were eliminated and still, the structure was in the best shape possible. There were various ways in which the structure embellished the importance of the city. Once the monument was completed, Baltimore got its nickname as ‘the monumental city’. The structure became its most significant landmark.
