In The Heart Of The City…

At the time when the monument was being constructed, the location was quite remote. However, once the construction was completed, the city gradually expanded over time and soon the structure found itself in the heart of the city. The official recognition and its significance were established a few decades later in 1971. This was the year when the American government bestowed the status of National Historic Landmark upon it. Now, the monument attracts thousands of visitors every day.

Just having the status of a National Historic Landmark will not save any monument from the process of decay, however. This is especially significant when the monument is no less than two centuries old. After a long lapse in care, the landmark eventually became highly dangerous for visitors, and it was in 2010 when authorities finally decided to start the renovation. The idea behind this task was to add more robustness and rigidity to the structure. There were a few reports that agreed that the whole project cost was somewhere around $6 million.
