A Man of Few Words
After 27 years of isolation, speaking to others was very difficult for Christopher. He had spent a lot of time “in his own head” so to speak, so he had to practice his speech once again. At first, he stuttered a lot. Astonishingly, in all the years he lived in the woods, he had only spoken one word, once. He had said “hi” to a hiker at some point, and that was it.

When Michael Finkel published The Stranger in the Woods, documenting Christopher’s story, more public sympathy followed, especially once they learned some of the details of his journey.
