A Life of Caution
Christopher’s biggest fear was that other people were going to discover him living there. Worse yet, the authorities might try to evict him. At the beginning, he took extra care not to make too much noise, or to move around a lot, as he didn’t want to draw any attention to himself. He was even careful about leaving snow prints in winter, and sneezed into his shirt so he could muffle the noise a bit.

Whenever he was out and about trying to find some food, Christopher took extra care not to leave any footprints. Perhaps this was why it was nearly impossible to track him down over the years. He was particularly worried that people in the area would grow suspicious about their items disappearing. He had hoped he covered his tracks well enough so they doubted the items being gone altogether, but as we now know, suspicions were raised nearly immediately.
