June 6th 1944 will forever be a historic day, marking what is known as “D-Day” for the invasion by Allied forces. In this massive attack on the German military, soldiers were deployed to the beaches of Normandy in France.

Historians differ on the meaning of the “D” in “D-Day”, with some suggesting it could stand for decision, departure or even doomsday. Irrespective of this, over 150 000 Allied soldiers infiltrated French beaches in an effort to liberate the country.

A war between humans should not mean that all compassion for animals goes out of the window. In this picture, Soviet soldiers feed a polar bear, who was nearly suffering from starvation and had a cub to look after as well.

Soldiers typically had an abundance of condensed milk, and because of its long shelf life, it was often consumed at the end of a meal. While other items were far more restricted, USSR soldiers had enough condensed milk to help out polar bears where possible.
