As you may have noticed, most photographs from WWII are in black and white. Some significant pictures were in color, especially those from pictures that were taken shortly after the war ended. This picture shows a rare color picture from during the war.

Photographers typically had to be as brave as the soldiers themselves, risking their lives in order to capture iconic snaps of a historic event. As a result, we are able to get a clearer idea of what the war was like, even all these years later.

Nazi Germany had over one thousand POW camps during World War II, with many prisoners coming from victories in France, the Balkans and even North America. As you can imagine, conditions in these camps were scary, unsanitary and downright inhumane.

As this picture depicts, Nazi officials liked to schedule regular visits to see what was going on in the camps. The tension is palpable, and with so many prisoners from different nationalities, one could often hear a pin drop during these awkward encounters.
