Nazi Germany had over one thousand POW camps during World War II, with many prisoners coming from victories in France, the Balkans and even North America. As you can imagine, conditions in these camps were scary, unsanitary and downright inhumane.

As this picture depicts, Nazi officials liked to schedule regular visits to see what was going on in the camps. The tension is palpable, and with so many prisoners from different nationalities, one could often hear a pin drop during these awkward encounters.
