During WWII, a lot of Dutch Jews died at a faster rate than the rest of Western Europe. Initially numbered at over 150 000, the overall Jewish community suffered major losses, and of the total number, only 5 000 returned. Some were still hiding in the Netherlands and elsewhere at the end of the war.

Nazi Germany did not give much thought or consideration to the Jews in the country. In this iconic photographs, Jewish citizens hide from Nazi soldiers, with little to no success. One child is seen wandering, likely walking to an untimely death.
Kehlsteinhaus (The Eagle’s Nest)
A third reich ear building, the Eagle’s Nest can be found right at the top of Kehlstein, adjacent to Berchtesgaden. Many important meetings for the Nazi party were held here, often attended by the Fuhrer himself.

It is said that Hitler visited the site over ten times, even though he was known for his fear of heights. While you may assume it was destroyed after the war ended, it still stands today, operating as a restaurant and tourist attraction.
