British officials preached that it was the responsibility of every citizen to play their part in supporting the nation in the ongoing war efforts. This meant that 18 year old Princess Elizabeth (soon to become Queen Elizabeth) even joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service to do her part.

Her training helped her to get skilled in military truck driving and other mechanic related tasks. To this very day, she is the only living head of State in the entire war who actively participated in WWII. This is a feat that hopefully won’t soon be thwarted.

Who said that only people were meant to help out their country during the war? Rip the search and rescue dog is one of the unsung heroes of World War II. This British dog was crucial in efforts to locate bombing raid victims.

The Honorable Dog
Rip was the first search and rescue dog in all of England, after being found by an air raid warden in London in 1940. A mixed-breed dog, he ended up saving more than 100 people and even received a medal for the bravery he displayed after the war was over.
