While it’s common for people to take extended sabbaticals for religious regions, in Christopher’s experience, this wasn’t the case. He had no particular motive for breaking away from society, preferring to say that it “just happened” and that he was tempted on an impulsive moment to see if he would be able to pull it off.

Taking Things To The Extreme
While some hermits need to sell things or beg in order to make ends meet, Christopher was determined to minimize his interactions with people altogether. His desire not to have to interact with human beings at all, led him to going with the extreme, which was stealing. He knew this was wrong, but he didn’t see any other choice.
