Heavens To Betsy
“Heavens to Betsy” is used as an exclamation of surprise or shock by Southerners. It is an old-fashioned expression that is rarely used today, and what is even more mysterious is the fact that its origin is completely obscure. The earliest usage that can be referenced is in a U.S. journal from a January 1857 volume of the Ballou’s dollar monthly magazine. No one can be sure who Betsy is, but one theory is that refers to Betsy Ross, the woman that stitched the initial star-spangled banner.
