It’s a strange and rare sight to see German soldiers posing with what looks like a real polar bear. In reality, this was something the soldiers did as part of a tradition and an obsession with the renowned white bears.

Apparently, these soldiers liked the idea of posing with a polar bear in costume, and perhaps it formed part of a new war tactic that they were testing out. Other pictures depict German soldiers dressing in a polar bear costume, affirming that it wasn’t all that uncommon after all.

Pictured here, is Georges Blind, a resistance fighter that were captured by the Nazi’s. He was asked to talk, but wouldn’t, so they staged this mock execution to share as propaganda. The location might have been used for executions, but not this particular time.

As it turns out, Georges kept his mouth shut about what he knew. He was sent to a concentration camp and died in late November of 1944, right before the end of the war. His resilient spirit lives on, as does the smile on his face in this terrifying photograph.
