Realizing we weren’t going anywhere quickly, I decided it was time to change gears. “Margaret,” I began, “how is the book club going?” Have you missed any meetings lately? She looked surprised by the rapid transition, blinking a few times before responding. “Oh, it’s fine,” she said, still distrustful of my motives. But discussing her latest book recommendations was enough to relieve the tension, if only temporarily, as we all appreciated the change of subject.
